How do I put on a Three piece bike crank on with open bearings?

My friend gave me his old three piece when I bent my one piece so out of shape that I would never have been able to fix. Just one problem I have "open" bearings (bearing that don't have a cover) but they are locked. I need some sort of place to get started putting it on ( we did it once but i refused to ride such a dangerous set up) so if any one knows some good diagrams or videos i would appreciate it.
